The real culprit is usually aluminum electrolytic capacitors that are used for filtering inside the radio. With temperature changes plus age, their electrolyte becomes dry and the capacitance decreases.
Filtering the line voltage at the input of the radio as suggested previously, is the cheapest and best solution.
