Thanks Michael, I think the choke is fine because it lowered the idle when I tapped the gas after it warmed up. But after sitting for so long it's starting to look like using a new replacement carb might be the ticket. I have one and can clean/rebuild the Holly later.
 
You know, it seems like once you learn what the few basic things to do are it all starts to make sense. I've learned a lot just from today's e-mails and feel confident instead of in the dark.

Check the choke for free movement; be sure it shuts when cold and opens fully when up to temp.  Also be sure the choke pull-off is working.  It will be a vacuum pot and linkage to force the choke open slightly as soon as the car starts.  If you can keep the car running, remove the air cleaner and open the choke slightly by hand to see if it smoothes out.
