Re: IML: Easy Fix

With all the interest in performance, and gas mileage, I had a flash-back, on my first car, a64 Dodge Polara, with only 42K (in 1969) I looked for all the performance I could extract from that old 318. I added a 4bbl intake, and dual exhaust, it still wasn't the tire smoker I dreamed of, but it did run better! After that, the only solution, was more MOTOR. That came with a 383 RoadRunner engine-trans.And when we pulled the old engine out, we found the heat riser valve stuck shut, which means: ALL exhaust gases from passenger side cylinders, had to pass through the intake heat riser passage under the carb, to exit the other manifold. Well I guess I'll never know just how good that old 318 could have run,BUT I've had other cars with the same problem,  and I know how good they did run after, I fixed them.Just something to think about the next time your changing oil, and under that monster. Ya'll have a nice day, Dave.

If memory serves me, the intakes pre-67 are all small bolt pattern AFB. 67-70 used Holley 4160 type carbs(larger bolt pattern) Some 71's had a carter AVS.(I had one)And after that, it was changed to the Carter Thermo-Quad spread bore type. The height of the intake also changed, newer versions were higher. The choke wells also changed, in some carb, intake combinations this could be an issue. If , I'm missing something , I'm sure someone will will add to the facts. Thanks, Ya'll have nice day, Dave.
