ATF+3 and +4 are completely backwards compatible, all the way back to Type A fluid. This answer is directly from the Chrysler Materials engineer that developed the new fluids, and I asked this question directly (I work at Mopar Parts Div). The newer fluids have friction modifiers and stabilizers to address the higher temperatures and tighter tolerances in the new transmission, otherwise they operate on similar chemistry.
