I forgot to mention that all cars with the panels have a canvas type impregnated gauze underneath.  This is designed to catch and hold water. ha ha.  Actually I guess it is there to cushion the stainless against drumming I guess.  My car with the dealer installed stainless did not have this fabric but rusted at the forward and aft corners anyway.  However, it did not have all of the pitting underneath.  When I re-installed I used a bead of silicone along the top edge and the leading edge, leaving the bottom edge open to allow breathing.  This lower edge is trapped under the rain gutter molding anyway.  I may have gone into this more on the '60 page under my dissertation on '60 trim removal.  The stainless does have a lip that runs along the top edge fitting under the pot metal spear.  Of course the groove in the underside of the pot metal isn't deep enough to fully accomodate this flange making it hard to get a really tight fit between the two.  Other than the flange they should be easy to reproduce.  I sanded mine to refinish and it's not quite the same had I had new one made with a true brushed finish.  Of course now I know of a company that could likely do the work and I've already installed mine.  It ain't going to be cheap though.  I just bought a large piece of flat stainless to go behind my new range and the prices are astronmical, metal costing what it does lately.
