Re: IML: replaceing 66 imp mirror

A word of caution with this procedure. Many years ago, I was reinstalling the mirror on my 63 after getting it back from the body shop. I couldn't quite reach the cable, so taped a piece of wire to the end. Well, I slid the wire through the hole in the fender & heard a noise. I looked up & saw smoke coming from under the dash. By the time I got under the dash, there were also flames coming out. I had managed to get the wire stuck in that wiring block where the windows & seat wires hook up. I managed to put the fire out with just minor burns to my hands &  about a foot of the wiring had melted insulation.

BE SURE you disconnect the battery before attempting this procedure.

Hola Tom

At the dash end, there is an large washer/nut holding it to the dash.  It is that "ring" around the mirror adjusting knob.  It is possible to use an large bladed flat screw-driver and tap it gently until it is free.

At the fender mirror end us an long shank # 2 phillips head screw-driver to take off the mirror from the fender.

At the inner fender/firewall area is an flexiable seal the mirror cable goes through.  If you pull/wiggle the assembly towards the front fender, it seems to come off/out.  The dash end of the cable is larger than the little bitty hole of the seal, sooo the seal comes out too.

To re-assemble I use a piece of wire and go from the inside to the outside.  When the wire is sticking out the fender, the direction is reversed to pull the unit back to the dash.  The hardest part to me is getting the seal fully back on.

And that is how I do it.
