IML: Push Button tranny ?

Most of the time when I turn the key in my '64 nothing happens. The neutral button is completely depressed, but if I lightly push any of the other gear buttons and release that button it will start. I have kind of considered this a default anti-theft system, but I am concerned it may just quit working. Anybody have any ideas?
