When I bought my '55 Imperial, I didn't know that it was positive ground, so I foolishly hooked up the battery backwards. The car ran that way, but the generator smoked, and it fried the radio and Fuel Gauge. I have since fixed the radio, not gotten around to the gas gauge, and the generator never gave trouble after the battery was connected correctly.

Jumping a car backwards is a differnt scenario as described in another post.

A friend once hooked up the battery on a 69 Pontiac Parisenne backwards.  There was smoke and hissing sounds. Very impressive. We were not sure to run away from the car or towards it.
I do not recall what happened to the car after that!

If the battery was hooked up backwards,
everything would not be dead, but several
things would go worng, or be damaged. Be sure
that the cable from the block is attached to
the negative (-) terminal of the battery, and
that the one attached to the relay is connected
to the positive (+) terminal of the battery. If
they are, then they are properly connected even
if they are the wrong color.

If you really mean 1955 instead of 1965. the
above information is incorrect. 1955 Imperials
are POSITIVE GROUND.

I think you're right.  I think the cables are
reversed or, in my case, most of the black
hoses have turned red.

I don't have a voltage meter or test light now.  I need to get one.

As far as the electrical EVERYTHING is dead.

I'm surprised the red one ends up under the a/c.  The negative cable
(usually black) is terminated somewhere around the a/c compressor.  It hooks  directly to the engine.  Is this cable connected to the negative terminal on
the battery?

Couple o' questions..
Do you have a Voltage meter or test light?
Is everything in the car dead or just the starting circuit?
