On the contrary, modern cars are the ones that are disposable.  You get it new and it's got lots of features, which is nice, but once things start to fall apart or you get in a little fender-bender, the cost of repairs is too high and there are so many specialized parts and computer modules that suppliers stop producing them sooner than they would have in the past b/c it's not cost effective, so you may not even be able to get the parts to fix it... 

So it's just easier and cheaper to go out and buy a new car, which is just fine with the automakers and the dealerships.  And since they know this, well then, why should they bother building a product to last 10 or 20 years, when they know you'll trade it in in 3?

I'd say mid 90's was the point where cars stopped being serviceable enough that you could keep repairing them and putting them back on the road, to where they started becoming disposable.

I was in Daytona Beach Florida last year had a problem with my security system not shuting off.The dealer told me that these cars are throw away cars. I stay in the parking lot about 2 hours finally was able to fix it myself.         John

Last winter our local Toyota dealer did an il change on my 86 Gran Fury. All they asked was that I bring in a filter. Also said they'd do most work on it if I brought in the parts.

Dave, don't feel alone. Years ago my Dad had his 77 Dodge Van TOWED to the local Dodge Dealer, and was told the same thing, since it was an ignition problem every component, if replaced was maybe $200. He had to then tow to a small independant shop.This was in Detroit no less. Dave.

Went to a five-star dealer in Richmond, Calif., over the weekend with an electrical problem and was firmly told they do not do any work on cars more than 15 years old.  The rest of the conversation is immaterial, the service writer was adamant and told me this after emerging from the servive manager's office.  Does this mean we're all officially "orphaned" by Chrysler China?
