Re: IML: Another Imperial Problem 1960 ALSO...

Hi Stephen:
I recently bled my brake system in a 69.
Start at the farthest wheel, PS rear then the DS rear, PS front, DS front.
I used a cheap bleeder kit from Harbour Freight Tools. It has`a short hose with a plastic barbed fitting which fits into the hole in the bleeder. There is a little plastic bottle which the other end of the hose goes into and which has a magnet to attach somewhere near to the brake.
Fill the master cylinder reservoir and start to pump. When you get fluid into the bottle, move to the next brake cylinder. Make sure that the master cylinder does not get too low.

For the final bleeding I like to have an assistant hold the brake pedal down while I slowly open the bleeder valve just a little and then close it quickly. This
keeps the system under a little back pressure which I think helps. After you close the bleeder, have the assistant release the pedal. While you are doing this look for bubbles. Repeat until there are no bubbles. Do the rotation of the four wheel cylinders and repeat until you have a good firm pedal.

Some places say that you must "bench bleed" a new master cylinder. (Bleed it first in a vice off the car) I have never done this and have installed quite a few successfully. It may take a little longer to do all the bleeding in the car, but you can do it.

Good luck.

HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 60, AND YES IT WAS THE M/C.

NOW I HAVE A TASK IN BLEEDING THE AIR OUT AS THE PEDEL GOES TO THE FLOOR !

SOME SAY START AT THE NEAREST WHEEL OTHERS AT THE FARTHEST ?

SO FAR NO JOY.... ANY INFO ON GETTING THE PEDEL BACK UP WOULD BE A RELIEF.

THANKS.

THE SMALL AND AWKWARDLY PLACED CHAMBER IS PROVING A PAIN...

 Hi Bill,

My first guess from your info is that the master cylider needs to be rebuilt or replaced. It sounds like fluid is leaking past the seals and you are losing pressure.

A problem surfaced today on my 1968 Crown Coupe, as you might guess, it concerns the brakes.   This car has always had excellent brakes, which never caused a problem, until today.  Here is what happened today, the car had good brakes at the start of the drive, but when I stopped for any reason, stop light, etc, noticed that the brake pedal would slowly sink toward the floor from the pressure of my foot.  At first, a couple of rapid pumps gave a hard pedal, but then the pressure of my foot again caused the pedal to go lower, which allowed the car to creep forward.  Just as I arrived home, had hardly any brakes left at all, more pumping of the brake pedal had no
effect.  Of course, I checked the master cylinder for fluid level, and found both compartments full to the brim, The engine runs smooth, which makes me doubt if there is a vacuum leak.   I need your suggestions as to what caused this problem and the fix you might recommend.  I have owned this car for fourteen years and the calipers had been converted to stainless steel sleeves prior to that.

Thank you,
