Re: IML: wiring harness

Hi Paul!...I would normally agree with you on the probability of 'repairing' the harness before 'replacing' it. However, the electrical gremlins I have been having seem to come from someplace in the harness (according to the FSM wiring diagrams) between the inside firewall junction block and the Ammeter....Somewhere in that area there is a '3-way factory splice' someplace which does not seem to be obvious from looking at the harness (for a total of hours!). Also, since this is, after all, 40 year old wiring and I am hoping to keep the car till I can no longer drive, removing the dash/harness and trying to makeup a new one (or find someone who has already done this and can make on for me) is the only other alternative I can think of. I REALLY don't want to have to do this or even think about removing the dash. However..!!!....Having said that, several other IML members have been kind enough to send photos and their own 'dash removal' stories (as well as 'you can do it' good wishes) regarding their own experiences with dash removal and the wiring problems they found after taking the harness apart looking for their own electrical 'gremlins'. As I stated, I really don't want to have to remove either the Dash or the harness, but, if I continue to have ele. problems I figure that there is ONLY one way to do this...and that's the right way!!... meaning, remove the whole thing and put in a new harness; have the gauges all redone while the dash is out; have the radio completely restored; refinish the wood dash panels...and probably several other things that will have to be addressed at the time as well.
...Sorry for the long-winded answer but, as I said, I REALLY do not WANT to remove/replace the Dash/Harness but ..... "ya gotta do, what ya gotta do!"
Thanks!
Dan

Can you tell us why you think you need to make new wiring harness for
both of your cars? The wiring in '66 was quite good. Good enough that
anything needs to be repaired should be possible without total
replacement.

Hi Bob!..sure sounds like a heck of a problem if I wanted to make a
whole new
harness.....you mentioned Greg Leggatt....would he possibly have the
material
and diagrams needed to make up a new wiring harness for my 66
Imperials?..or are
they very very expensive to have made up???
Thanks for your email!

You would be amazed at the number of changes in the wiring harness from
64
to 65 and from 65 to 66. I supplied patterns to Greg Leggatt who builds
new
wiring harnesses (email:
leggatt@xxxxxxx ) .

As Greg and I went through the original harnesses from 64, 65 and 66,
it
made no sense why Chrysler made some of the changes.......for instance,
in
64 the connections to the front turn signal lights use a female
connection,
but in 65 they changed to a male connection.........

Then you add the complication of a different wiring harness for cars
with AC
or with AC and AutoPilot or with 4 way flasher. I didn't even mention
the
signal sentry system (not used in 64). It can be a nightmare.
