Re: IML: Paint colors

well, I went to the NAPA distribution center for Oregon/SW Washington and they were unable to do anything w/ the paint chips in their books for any kind of paint in my original color (sunset rose). They made a call to their national rep.  I also went to Industrial Finishes here in PDX, which supplies bodyshops in the NW. They carry PPG, DuPont, Diamont, Western, Ditzler, etc.  They also called their rep.

so.....  Maybe they called Elizabeth Arden as a color consultant.

Any GOOD auto paint store should be able to take the original color coge from the data plate and mix replacement paint. It will take some work on their part (and usually a call to the paint rep). I was able to get the local PPG shop to do the Shell Pink of my 58. It does help if they have a sample part of the car, if you are matching existing paint (versus a full repaint) due to fade, etc.
This only is for the original single stage paint. If you are repainting and using a base/ clear system, you need to look for one of the few companies that will cross reference to the original formulas.
Chrysler Historical does have information on production figures, including option rates for colors (up to about 1967). They could tell that "x" color was applied to "xx" % of 1958 Imperials for example. If you send CH  $40 and proof of ownership (title copy) they can tell you the production figures,  where your car was sold, photo copy the build sheet, etc.

there is an online paint site that claims to be able to mix any original color back to the 30's.  If you are thinking of doing a basecoat/clearcoat set up, you could buy your urethane base online and just buy any urethane topcoat system of your choice locally (saving shipping) to coat it (according to my brother who paints automotive/commercial vehicles professionally).

The other option would be to pull a trunklid, door,  or take the car to your paint shop and have them shoot/match a doorjamb or underneath the trunklid after you rub it out w/ polishing compound and are fairly sure you don't have oxidation on the spot they pull the color sample from.  They told me that they were unable to match from a chip/chart.  The codes on there are the paint brand codes and usually the corresponding factory paint code.
For instance, mine is XS = cloud white and sunset rose.

I have often wondered this myself and would like to know how many 58's are the same as mine.  My 58 Crown is Ermine and Champagne gold.  I would love to paint mine the same colour and bought paint chip charts from Ebay thinking the codes on them were mixing codes.  I took them to my PPG paint supplier and they said those codes do not mean anything to them and said I would have to get the proper mixing codes.  Where do you get the mixing codes from and what are the codes on the paint chip charts?.

Subject: IML: Paint colors

Does anyone know if records were kept of how many Imperials were painted a particular color in a given model year?  I have a '58 Crown Southampton 4 dr in Spring Green.  The paint is original and I love the color.  I haven't seen another Imperial that color green and am wondering how many other Spring Green Crowns rolled off the assemble line in 1958.
