Aren't the ring and pinion a MATCHED SET?? How would you just drop in a "used ring"? I'd be looking for another shop.

It isn't suppose to make any noise. Well, I just had my sure grip rebuilt because of a whine by a reputable rear end shop here. I took it out myself and handed it to them. Replaced all bearings and clutches, but not the ring and pinion because it looked good to them. $540. worth all together. They showed me the clutches and they were in terrible shape-broken and such so it needed doing. Guess what, the whine is still there! The rebuilder drove in my car and said it's the ring and pinion. He was wondering if this might be the nature of this beast? They said they'd be willing to drop in a used ring for $150. more with no guarantees on the whine because it's used. I really don't want to sink more $ into this if I can help it for a new one What are your opinions about this possibly being normal and is there any magic oil that might quiet it down a bit?(besides bananas?) Anyone?
