Re: IML: Another Sure grip ratio question

Chris

In 1967 the 8 3/4 rear axle assembly was offered in the 2.9 ratio if nothing was said with your Imperial.  If the original order had the Sure-Grip, the Towing Package or Hi-Per 440 package with 375 Horse Power engine, then it would have had the 3.2 ratio in your Imperial.  This is from the 1967 FSM.

The 1967 year was also the first official year of the ending of the 8 3/4 rear axle assembly and the start of the beginning ( fazing in ) of the 9 1/4 axle assembly's era.  This information is also in the 1967 FSM.  An gambling person would want to speak up on an sure bet to say that you have the older 8 3/4 unit.

The gears is the same part number if the rear axle is or is not the Sure-Grip.  For the 3.23:1 gears in the 8 3/4 unit the number from any MoPar dealer is waiting for an phone call from you.  Your local NAPA store may even have this ratio.  In the Imperial, the complete Chrysler line of Chrysler's, the Dodge's, the Plymouths this was the favorite choice for Hi-Per, Towing, Sure-Grip and Police Vehicles.  In Dodge Vans and Pick-ups it was the basic rear axle ratio used if nothing different was marked.

You asked if the standard Sure-Grip ratio ( 3.23:1 in 1967 Imperials ) would lessen the value of your car.  No Sir it will not.

ps
I hope I read and copied of of it correctly from the FSM

Hi all and thx for all your responses,

I am told that I won't find a NEW ring and pinion set in a stock 2.94 ratio.
I could try used. I was also told that a 323 ratio would be fine too.  Would
this be true?  I'd rather go with the factory ratio but if it makes little
difference why not go 323?  Will it drop right into my 8-3/4"   742 case?
Would a 323 lessen the value of my stock car?

Thanks,
