The wiring for the dash lights is white with red connectors.

it does have that type of lights and i do have some small leads hanging down . but nowhere on that unit is there a spot that a wire would plug into . i looked on the wiring diagram and it doesn't show either i am bewildered

1961 used the electroluminescent panel lighting, so there probably is no bulb that lights up the buttons.  I'm guessing of course, since I don't have a 61.  There would be a thin wire from somewhere that would cause the button areas to glow under the presence of the high voltage from the power pack when the dash lights are turned on.  Maybe your Amp gauge wires in the dash were the origination point of your electrical malfunction.  I once saw a 1966 amp gauge that was all melted and the wires burned up on that car as well.

I checked under the hood really good and could not find any burnt wires at all. I noticed before all this happened my amp meter was jumping all over the place. The two wires coming off the amp meter seem to be burnt the worse. I have the dash taken apart. I'm splitting open all the taped wires looking for any burnt ones. It seems to have started inside the car. Another question. For five years now I have been trying to figure out where the light source plugs into the push button heater controls. That's the only area that doesn't light up. For the life of me I just don't see how a light source attaches to those clear push buttons

wouldn't have likely been the cause. There are several other areas to
look, both under the dash and under the hood. The wiring diagrams are
very good. When you have time, you can trace through them and determine
what went bad, then replace the wiring. The instrument cluster is easy
to remove. You may find something there, but I suspect there will be
lots of burned wires to and from the source of the trouble. If you have
done any recent work, that might be a good place to start. I hope this
helps. Nearly all the accessories are fuse protected. I would guess it
is within the main power circuit.

The other day while driving my car at night suddenly I lost all power
and my car filled with smoke. I noticed that both wires going to my amp
meter and one wire to my ignition. burned up . what could have cause
this to happen ?? any place I should look first I was thinking maybe it
was the voltage regulator any clues thanks
