Since I grew up re-finishing many wood boats, the preferred method of prepping wood surfaces is to use bronze wool, sand paper, or scotch-brite pads. Steel wool will leave behind metal particles that can rust, spoiling the finish. And don't forget the tack-rag wipe before the finish sealer is applied. Done right, done once.
