If it were that important - a charge of "denser" cold
air, I think that the cars would have had it designed
in. Aside from some performance cars with shaker
hoods and so forth, and I put that stuff down to
marketing, very, very few cars have a hood/air scoop
or such system of any sort. It is certainly not a
challenge or great expense to do, and my 1972 for
example has the intake snorkel canted to the DS. In
front of the battery are some louvers that let in cool
air. The combination of the fan shroud and extension
of the mouth of the snorkel combine to allow the carb
to intake relatively cool air is my opinion.

They could have skipped the snorkel and used two
stamped circles of metal just like the after market HP
units, but did not, opting instead for a more complex
arrangement that had been present since at least 1960.

If it were that important, I'd argue that things would
either be designed that way, or there would be a
roaring aftermarket in conversion kits and everyone
would have heard what a good deal it is. Instead,
energy has gone into cams, exhaust, and other more
expensive things, so I'm not inclined to see this as a
very fertile opportunity for gains.
