Hot Rodded 81-83s?

D^2,
I own of one of these "hot rodded" 83s. :0
Don't be so quick to dismiss the crate engines 380hp. I am not sure of the
net v. gross rating, (I couldn't find the test), but I know a kid who put
one in a '69 Dart and was immediately in the 12s. Driver, with a 3.55 rear.
It has CONSIDERABLY more powerful than other small blocks and as powerful as
your '68, though you might have a small tourque advantage.
The Magnum motor has the modern heads etc. and is more efficient than the
old designs. My original plan was to put a crate in my car, but the 360 in
there know is pretty strong, so I don't feel like the extra work.
The main problem is the stock exhaust chokes everything back. I am looking
into a new exhaust, but NYC emissions may be a problem. I hope to put a dual
2.5 w/x pipe and dual convertors, like a 5.0 mustang, but I have to pass the
test every year. I don't mind the sniffer, it's the visual test that will
give me a problem. That is where your '68 has the big advantage.
Does anybody know the weight on these behemoths? I have heard the J-body
80s cars weigh from 4000 to 4500. If that is true what do the earlier even
larger Imperials weigh?
Rob
