Don't know if all of you remember the 40s and 50s but a car
with 50 or 60K miles was considered having high mileage and
if the car still exists today it probably was put up on
blocks or in a barn. The others were traded in, sold, or
scrapped and most of those are gone today. A car back then
with 100 or 160K miles would have been very, very unusual.
There's no reason to doubt a 57 car with 60K miles as being
"original" - in fact it's very believable. having 160K miles
- doubtful! You can't look at "average" miles per year as
any kind of yardstick for these older cars because obviously
many of them have sat unused for many years.
A better measurement than any kind of mileage is the
"condition" of the car today! Who can verify "actual" miles
after 40 or 50 years anyway? Hearsay from the seller? Oil
change receipts? Odometers?
Condition is "now" and is very verifiable. That's my
criteria for evaluating an old car. It indicates the level
of care and treatment.
