Nick,

I agree with Dave. Stragand and also have used fluorescent hobby
red for my own cars and as shop manager of two restoration
shops.  Have not tried halogen bulbs but have often found that
just changing out old for new would add about an extra 25% of
illumination which may be all you want or need.
