[FWDLK] Reverse Light Switch

I have a 59 Desoto in which I'm trying to get the reverse lights to work. I
traced their wires to a plug under the dash. I tried hooking them up but
there is no switch that is supposed to be located on the pushbuttons for the
transmission. Were they an option? If so why do you suppose they would go
through the trouble running wires only to leave out a cheap switch?
