Re: [FWDLK] Re. PCV Venting

Dave & all:  PCV does indeed mean "positive crankcase ventilation", but as indicated by Mr Stanley there has to be a way for air to enter the crankcase.  Failure to provide this "flow" will result in numerous oil leaks due to the fact that gaskets can be "sucked in" due to negative pressure inside the crankcase which could be present when subjected to engine vacuum.  Early PCV equipped engines used a breather not unlike non-PCV equipped engines, and later ones (70 or so), pulled air through "clean" air inside the air cleaner housing via "sealed" breather/hose arrangements.  Note that 67 or so models had a hose running from a "push-on" style breather on the valve cover to the air cleaner housing, and in about 70, the breather was "sealed" at the valve cover (grommet).  The PCV valve became "sealed" at the valve cover with a grommet around 68 or 69.

Not to discredit Mr. Stanley, but I always understood PCV to stand for Positive Crankcase Ventilation, though his interpretation seems perfectly plausible. Any insight from other list members?

All,

An engine equipted with a PCV unit still requires a crankcase inlet vent/filter to work. Do not block off the filler/vent. The Polution Control Valve regulates the amount of vacuum being used for various engine use conditions. I could post a section of the MoPar emissions control section that outlines the history and function of the system if requested. Most MoPars from 1963 to about 1967 used a cap that had the PCV unit mounted in it that directly replaces the draft tube. But you still need the filler cap/vent. I have one on my 1958 Golden Commando engine. Direct Connection may sell one.
