This may be totally unrelated to your car, but my '57 Fury had a similar
problem that was solved because of a friend's expertise.  It was running
fine, then one day, I got a rough idle.  Then it turned weird.  Turns out I
was driving home on the interstate and I lost power, but the engine still
ran.  I pulled over.  At idle I could throttle and get lots of rpms.  But
put it in gear and it would die out after 30 seconds or so.  After finally
traversing 8 miles in about 2 hours getting it home, my friend put the car
up on his hoist.  He figured out the problem after a couple of hours.  Turns
out, my car had about 2500 miles on it since complete rebuild, including a
complete reconditioning of the gas tank and a new fuel intake, but there was
an additional fuel filter near the gas tank that had become clogged with
silt and debris from reconditioning the gas tank.  After removing and
cleaning that filter, problem solved for me. . . .
