The 518 tranny on my 1994 full size Dodge van died in central Wisconsin. A
shop there knew that I was stranded and said $1800. I came back to the
suburbs of Chicago and found that my trusty local shop wanted $950, and they
had a towing service that would bring it back to the Chicago area (400 miles
roundtrip!) for $150. Naturally, I had the local shop do the work, and I
have put on another 40,000 miles with no problems. Moral: shop around, the
prices differ very substantially. Best regards, Jim

Yes it is high and I would look for alternatives BUT I was quoted $1800 for
my Caravan trans (fixed it by changing the fluid from Dextron back to
Chrysler 7176 ...you cant always believe the owners manual!)
My friend just paid over $2500 for the trans on his 97 Bronco 4wd. I quess
in the scheme of what transmission shops get for ordinary cars that is not
all that excessive.
