Re: [FWDLK] ' 57 coronet rear brakes

Larry,

Sounds as if you have oversize brake shoes.  They were used when the drums were machined to their maximum and the material on the regular shoes was too thin to make proper contact with the drums.  Thus the extra thick lining on the shoes.  Is there an "O/S" or "OS" on the box after the "TS 85"?

By the way, Chrysler's "Total Contact Brakes" were made by Lockheed.

Subject: [FWDLK] ' 57 coronet rear brakes

Hi Larry, What part number are the brake shoes from NAPA? I just ordered a set through them for my ' 58 DeSoto and they were too thick. They were supposed to be for the 11"x 2 1/2" mopar brakes. The part number was TS 85, and the listing in their catalog said ' 59--' 62 or therabouts. The lining material is too thick! So, beware! (The drum wouldn't fit over the shoes once mounted, even with the adjusters all the way in). Now, logically you'd think that a one year difference wouldn't make a difference, considering that ' 57 thru at least ' 62 were "Total contact brakes" and not the earlier Lockeed brakes. Perhaps someone out there can offer some insight on this subject. Good luck with your brakes, Larry.
