40 HP sounds like a BUNCH.  I have been in the A/C trade for 34 years and
never got real close to doing car air conditioning, but a normal size motel
room would take about 3/4 to 1 HP compressor to cool it.  So my guess is it
may be nearly 1 HP from the engine.  Just a guess and maybe I shouldn't
guess and add my 2 cents.
