I gotta say, that my $0.02 worth would be a bent pushrod or two. The Belvy
started backfiring badly not long after I got the car running again. I did
vacuum checks, cylinder pressure checks, rebuilt the carb and distributor,
etc. It wasn't until I removed the valve cover and saw 3 pushrods leaning
towards me that that must be my problem. Once I replaced them, everything
was nice a smooth again. As someone else suggested, remove the valve cover
and get a good look at what you have. Could be something as simple as a
pushrod.
