The purpose for the groves is to let the dust have somewhere to go. The "squeel" is the dust being pinched, squeezed, and rolled between the lining and the drum as it rotates over the shoe. This was also a fix for some disc brake pads years ago.

. I don't understand very well how grooving the lining !! side to side ? top to bottom ? diagonal ?  This applies to P30 D64 rear brakes. Not for front brakes ?
