Hi all,
my 59 Dodge suddenly developed a noticable amount of play in the steering during the past few weeks. now the car wanders and requires constant steering correction.
Everything UNDER the car is OK. centerlink and idler arm are are new. tie rod ends, pitman arm, contol arm bushings, joints, etc are fine. What I see is that I can move the steering wheel back and forth a few inches before the pitman arm starts to react. So this looks like a problem in the steering box. I toyed with the adjustment on the box that tightens up the worm gear meshing or whatever, but that had no effect.
A friend told me that his '62 has some sort of rubber bushing in the input area of the steering box that the steering shaft slides into (square or flat end info a square or slot hole, surrounded by rubber) and that went bad, which produced slop. Speculates that this is the same problem I am having. But, that was years ago...
Anyone out there with experience that can confirm that a '59 has this? I still don't have a parts book (which would hopefully have an exploded view of the steering box).
This same friend says "I dunno WHERE you'll get one of these if you need one....or what its called, even."
