Turning the drive gear with a screwdriver will only get it up off the cam gear. You still need a way to grab it without it falling back into place. I use a pair of reverse-action pliers that spread out when you squeeze. The tips are thin for spreading c clips or lock rings and it fits in the slot quite well. Insert them down the hole, squeeze hard, twist, and pull. Works great.
