I actually bought the 'Bullit' DVD to watch that scene. The Charger doesn't actually get blown up. If you watch it frame-by-frame then you can see it pass by the Gas Storage Tanks in the background as they blow up. No doubt it impacted SOMETHING and was destroyed, but the explosion didn't do it. A friend of mine pointed this out back in the old VCR days, and I could never really see it, but with the DVD it is crystal clear.
Very interesting of course.
The Dukes are another story though. They killed a lot of 68-70 Chargers, and they inspired the destruction of many countless more. I personally have seen the effects of jumping these cars on the ones that I have found for sale, or in junkyards, etc. Never pretty.

What's as much fun is seeing that the cars that get blown up usually
have NO motor. One has to wonder how they got to the explosion! If
memory serves that is the fate of the Charger in Bullit, as it goes
into the gas station. And i remember the Dukes flying thru the air over
a bridge that was out, Hood up and no engine.
As to the 4 door Coupe, the Chief Designer stated that he considers the
NEW Charger as a 4 door Coupe.
Hang onto those memories, it's getting to be all we have..... and
losing them!
