I recently gave in and put universal electric fuel pumps on all my cars.
I was tired of all that cranking after the cars sat for a couple of
weeks.  Works great - I have a momentary push button under the dash that
I hit for a few seconds and it fills the carb.  Got them at Pep-Boys for
about $30.  As for a check valve - I believe the mechanical pump already
has check-valving in it.   I mounted mine on the frame under the pass.
floor and cut into the steel fuel line.
