[FWDLK] True Gasoline Octane Ratings



Well, there are different octane rating methods, most common being the research octane number [RON] and the motor octane number [MON].  In the 1930's the MON was used but the RON became standard in 1947.
 
Nowadays the average is used.[RON+MON/2]  So today's 91 octane is as potent in some ways as 1950's "100 octane."

Big block engines from the 50's & 60's sometimes required gasoline with octane ratings over 100.  For example, a 1964 T-Bird I once owned with a 390 called for 102 octane premium fuel.  (Yes, I wised up & now have a Mopar!)

Does anyone have REAL comparisons for our old cars to today's octane ratings?
