My first 57 Plymouth used to do that,check your motor mounts,my right one
was broken allowing the left side of the engine lift under hard acceleration
(think of the way the mounts work on these the angle of the rubber donuts keeps
the engine in place,poor design).Anyway the distributor cap would hit the heater
box just enough to break the rotor and leave you stuck.I used to carry a spare
rotor everywhere,I discovered the broken mount on the right side when I removed
the engine to replace it with a 360.The rubber wasn't broken,it was the metal
where the round part was welded to the bracket that bolts to the block,you'd
never notice it by just looking,at idle the engine sat where it belonged.
