Re: [FWDLK] 56 Dodge Factory Aluminum Intake

My thoughts on this…

It’s the exhaust gasses that flow through the intake cross over to help warm up the intake fuel/air mixture during warm up (when still too cold).

Then there’s a heat valve in the exhaust manifold, that shuts off the exhaust gasses from passing the intake manifold cross over when temperature is high enough.

Now when your car has an exhaust gas intake cross over (wow! lot of words, I’ll use c/o from here…), the bi-metal to operate your choke is in the heat sink located in the c/o, right where the exhaust gasses pass.

When you don’t have a c/o, the choke (when not manual or electric!) is usually connected to the exhaust manifold, through a metal, cloth isolated line. So, without c/o, your carb’s choke works just fine too!

So, the ‘only’ purpose for a c/o seems to be to quicken the intake temperature to help obtain the optimal fuel/air mixture, during warm up, after starting.

It does not help starting at all, that’s what the carb’s choke is for.

And no, I didn’t steal that aluminium manifold on eBay. Yes, I hate to see it go. I would have paid anything for it, and told seller I would outbid anyone, and asked him about ‘buy-it-now’ offers from other sellers, which he said he had received several but wouldn’t do.

Wish I had offered him a deal too….

as for heat crossovers.... i have to say they arent as important as some say, exc for the operation of a choke stove if equipped or if your hot air loop enters the crossover...

think about it... when you start the car in the dead cold of the winter, 1st thing in the morning, the engine, intake, crossflow, carb etc... are all cold, even with a functioning exh choker to force one bank of exh through the intake, it still takes a good couple of minutes to bring the intake area up to temp..  i usually block the crossflow with sheetmetal inserts from one side just to help warm weather performance, and really dont have cold driving issues since i either run an electric choke or manual on some cars for other applicable reasons.

so if anyone feels like you should steer clear of an intake due to a lack of crossflow, lower your inhibitions and buy it...  i used to daily drive a 70 judge back in h.s. with a victor pontiac intake... in snow, M22, 4.56s, the whole nine... just because it was fun... and it warmed up ... well in about 10 min or so before leaving on the days i wasnt driving a finned mopar or my fairlane at the time.
