Well Neil the car You are referring to-------Now, it gets interesting : "Our test car has bagged a few stock car
class trophies at the San Fernando  drag strip to
date. The fastest time in the 1/4 mile is 83.6 mph. A D500 Coronet
'stick' 2-dr , also owned by san Fernando Valley
Motors, presently possesses the strip class record of 84.6 mph. It is
rquipped with a 4.56  rear end gear ratio and an
optional camshaft. While the top speeds of both cars through the 1/4
mile are only one mph apart, the e.t. of the stick-
shift car is about 1 1/2 seconds less than the P/lite equipped car."

UNFORTUNATELY, no actual elapsed-times are given-out, by MT.

Although there may be no way of determining the actual e.t., of a 84.6
trap-speed, my SWAG is that
the car was running in the mid 16's (see the 57 Coro's time) ------- NOT!!!!!                                                                THIS is the single carb  car I was talking about. The ET   IS PUBLISHED  and I will look it up for you, it was in the mid 15 sec range and a track record at the time. People keep saying it was not possible for the 56 Dodge to run in the 15 sec range when instances can be cited and Really Neil I am sure at the World Series of Drag Racing they didn't go by the drivers speedo. Whatever the case there is always a reason for numbers and as you know from day to day at places like Daytona Beach numbers could very greatly, the Fury was tested on a different day than speed weeks if I remember correctly and at any rate was allowed a factory experimental set up. The first official day was called off for some reason But it was thought by Hot Rod Mag. that the Kiekhaefer 300b might have hit 150 on a one way run because of the tail wind. But Hey I guess maybe we should not consider the 300b's official run as NOT very impressive knowing CK had much too much experience tuning the Chrysler Hemi. The significance of official competition is that it is done with all contestants dealing with similar conditions. Come On Neil, Norm MacDonald tried a D500 and had a very poor top end run, he got the car from a dealer and I am sure he didn't do a tune shakedown on the car, did this mean all D500  cars were tied to this test. Road test from mags. all through the years have had a host of problems with test cars, especially high performance test cars. Andy and Ron I will do some checking because the article I have on the San Fernando car has some very good stuff and will shed some light for those who still are having trouble seeing. As for the 57 car at the strip it is a shame that more high profile drivers were not involved as it may have produced great numbers. Heck the Desoto ran a very stout number on the beach in 56 that was in the 300b territory but was unofficial, what wizzard of race prep was Desoto using I wonder, certainly not a household name. From this standpoint one could argue the Desoto was the most impressive showing on the beach for Chrysler Corp.--- seems it did the most with the least!
