Re: [FWDLK] Fw: (no subject)

The number I have heard recently is Detroit assembly line workers make around $57 per hour, plus great medical, retirement, layoff, and vacation benefits. And then there are all the perks, benefits, and bonuses going to Detroit management. I would say they are burning the candle at both ends. To be competitive and stay in business, both sides will need to bring their pay out of the clouds and back to planet Earth.

And then the Democrats in Congress, as a condition for the bailout, will want Detroit to abandon their current vehicle designs and re-tool to make “green” hybrids and electric cars which very few customers want to buy at double the cost of equivalent conventional cars. This is one reason why Dems (Pelosi and Reed) won’t let us drill for oil here and now. High oil prices make hybrids look more affordable.

And then Obama wants to tax coal companies and coal power plants out of existence, doubling or tripling electric rates, making electric car operation even more costly.

Sadly, I have little hope for the future of Detroit and Chrysler, as we know it.

I heard a different number of at least 7% going towards union wages and pensions on gmc vehicles which gave an average of $2500.00 per vehicle produced by them.   Fern

The $1,200 dollars, if that is the number, I believe also covers those already retired and their medical benefits as well as those still on the assembly line.
