Re: [FWDLK] Fwd: [FWDLK] 58 Coronet Hemi

Shouldn’t it at least have the matching D500 badge on the trunk lid?

Hi  Jim,

There are also many documented cases were Chrysler had supply shortages and would supplement with whatever parts may fit.

I have had at least 2 69 Chargers that had 1968 console shifters in them.  One was an late 68 build (September, 1968), so a no-brainer.  The other though was a early 69  build, so since the Coronet used the same shifter (only the Coronet used the 68 style knob and shaft-in 69) they put the Coronet unit into this car.  A little research revealed a supply shortage of several parts during January 1969, when this car was built.  This included Tic-Toc-Tach’s, so no cars were built with them during that month, and some components of steering wheels, resulting in cars that had woodgrain steering wheels instead of the correct half-ring horn wheel.  This car also had a woodgrain wheel when all of the coding and build sheet called for half-ring.  A hand written note at the bottom of the broadcast sheet showed both substitutions.

No doubt this is what may have happened with your Coronet…didn’t have the right engines at the moment, so put in what they had.  This also applied to almost all other manufacturers.   So this is something you may want to dig into.

Take Care,

Charles.

The seller says that this car has a hemi because of some excess hemis laying around at the end of the model year.  However, the engine has a Feb 1958 date code.  It is true that Chrysler Corp frequently built out cars at the end of the model year with the excess accessories.  For example, power windows, power seats, cruise control...  you name it.  But, I never heard of this applying to engines.   Also, the build out would be in late June/early July just before the switchover to the next year's cars in late July/early August.  In my opinion, the date code on this engine is way to early to have anything to do with the end of year build out programs.

Best,

Jim in northern Illinois

This car was discussed over on the FWDLK website's General Discussion
board.

As the standard 1958 Coronet V/8 engine was the  carry-over 325 Poly
head motor, but with a 2-bbl carb, it seems logical that someone
installed a direct bolt-on D500 single-4bbl set up.

The seller states that he thinks that the engine has never been removed.
If so, the engine block was painted blue while still installed--not all
that tuff to do.

The seller declined to tell me what the engine stamping number is, but
I'll bet that it's L325-1xxx .

The car's carb may be a vintage 1956, so the set-up may be from that
year; the 4-bbl air cleaner is from a 57/58 NY'er/IMP, as the 57 D500's
oval air cleaner has  a plain, non- "embossed/decorated " detachable
filter enclosure ---which would make sense if this is a '56 D500, as the
56'ers had a round oil bath air cleaner, not very compatible with a 1958
car.

The car's colors are Sunshine Yellow and Gallant Gold. Very attractive,
and, a nice car, overall, but not anything OEM-special.

My humble tidbit of info:  altho the valvecovers appear to be 'dimpled' That is Not the style of dimple I would expect to see on a 354. Chrysler or Dodge.  I would expect to dee the round dimples on the Dodge baby hemi's

I HAVE seen Desoto and Dodge hemi's miss-identified, "Yups that's  a 392 all right"

I do seem to recall that 354's were available from 56 to 58. And yups, in some Dodge applications you can find 354's. (think mainly trucks, and the D-501 cars for 57 and 58)

AND since it only has a 120 mph speedo, I would research the car more before accepting the potential of it being a D501 (other experts free to chime in and continue my education here)
