As to owning a police car/fire chief car: It can be very
troublesome. I was stopped many times by all sorts of police, city,
county, and state when I made a 65 Fury III sedan into a fire chief's car.
Most of the cops didn't like the idea much and told me so. I had to keep a
copy of the State of CA motor vehicle regs in the car to show I wasn't a
scofflaw. Should I ever have had the emergency lights or siren in
operation, I know I would have been hauled in front of a judge. One
Highway Patrol told me that he was considering gjving me an equipment violation
ticket so I would have to explain to a judge why I should not have to remove the
stuff. Now a few firemen and two cops thought it was cool but most did not.

1959 was
the last year it was available on a 6-cylinder engine and was
replaced by
the A904 for 1960 on 6-cylinder cars.
The cast-iron Torqueflite was a
V8-only transmission, as was Powerflite
after 1959. The cast iron

replaced by the aluminum case
A727 for the 1962 model year.

an original 61 squad car, the steering wheel is wrong, 57
plymouth savoy
wheels were used. the radio is wrong, rear side trim was
not through the
rear door, not sure if emblem is on rear fenders but

deleted also. these used 12 inch brakes on front and
rear. needs hard to
find wide 14 inch wheels to clear drums. there is also
extra pieces of metal
welded to the front suspension, a battery shield,
plus other small items to
be a squad. I have the original build sheet with
mine. I have the 318 4bbl
with torqueflite and 3:23 open rear end. any

had full undercarriage skid plates made from 1/4'' plate, protected
everything from the sway bar's centermost section to the trans tailshaft,
and the the fuel tank separately [tanks are termoplastic] my
unmarked PA state patrol car had cloth power frt seats, no undercarriage
protection, cutouts for spots but no spots, but had full cage and cuff
rail. another retired county sheriff car had yet a different front
only skid plate, drivers spot/provision, and other details the next 3 had
or didnt have....
they could be ordered in any color int/ext... the std
pkg on those included LT1 engine/4L60E trans, 9C1 pkg [suspension
upgrades/brakes- same as impala SS] silicone lifetime radiator and heater
hoses, certified speedo - i saw my best one hit 162 on rt 21 south one
night- dont know what the limit is- some cop cars were governed to 134 i
think, some were not. there were wire harness options/locations as well-
rear interior handles were never deleted- but some were "factory
disabled"
this breed of car can probably only be proven by the
must-have/std equipment, documentation of service, or overall
period-correct accessories/equip.

I had a Chevy police
Sales brochure which showed many different packages
and options to be ordered. the basic car had a 2" tube running
from the trunk to under the dash for installing the wiring for radios and
suchlike in the trunk. Also things like delete inside door
handles, lock etc for the rear doors, rings for hooking
handcuffs to, optional locations for the roof wiring, spotlights and
more.
I am sure that varying jurisdictions bought their fleet cars to different
specs though. I know California Highway Patrol went with a weird
Polara / Dart hybrid in 61. I thought they used 15" inch
wheels. The 60 Dart Washington SP Pursuit car I had ran a B-block
383 with a 3-speed stick and 3.23 sure grip on 15" inch wheels. Vintage
literature shows Mopar offered cars as "pursuit" cars and "cruisers", and
no doubt this opened up a whole can of worms for different equipment
applications. Got pictures of your c! ar ?

I remember growing up (in Idaho) with the cops
using red lights on
their cruisers. The law changed here to blue lights
for the cops, I
remember it because a couple of my buddies who were in the
local
volunteer fire department had to swap out the blue lenses on the
flashing lights in their grilles for red ones to keep from getting a
ticket.

Today I finally
obtained a copy of my favorite calendar, the NAPA "Classics". I've
enjoyed these calendars for probably 23 years.
To add to my
glee in getting the calendar was turning to January, and being stared down by
a gorgeous '56 Fury, owned by John Delap. John, are you a member of this
list?
I noticed the
Fury's lights were on when the photo was made...probably because of the
gorgeous brunette kneeling next to it, caressing its fender (my lights would
be on, too if I were in that car's tires). I guess that makes it a "boy"
car, eh? 8-)
Not only have I
enjoyed the top-notch photo quality in these years of the NAPA calendars, but
they almost always have the female models tastefully clothed and posed.
However, I had to chuckle at October's photo of the '70 300 Convertible...the
young lass looks like she may have posed for one of those import tuner
magazines.
Well, there, I've
shared my excitement for the day...LOL...

had a 59 suburban wagon fire cheif's car- it had 19,000 miles and all its
equipment, factory single-tone coral. it had the red globe and in NJ it had to
run a "sock" on the gumball when in transit-- i found out when i threw it on
one night leaving a cruise! no problems from that though- some of you
may have seen it- it was originally lebelled for Oaklyn NJ, it was sold to a
guy in NY, then resold on ebay, then restored, rebadged and painted red and
sold yet again for over 30k with now 21,000 actual miles- we sold it in
1998ish, the big numbers came in around 2003ish...
had flat thick black
vinyl seats- installed over the orig upholstery- you can see the piping
patterns in the seatinga nd backrests, savoy-level dash, siren, tube
transmitter radio, spring-loaded whip, red gumball, siren and side/tail
lettering.... maybe i'll dig out the ol 35mm shots and scan them one day----

mine has the red bubble, also the interior is gray vinyl including a
lighter gray vinyl headliner, no rear arm rests are in my car either. my
car was in the calendars that were produced a few years ago. they are an
ugly car but it has had more pictures taken of in than all my other cars
combined. the people love it at parades. cruising down the freeway, people
always wave and some come along side to take pictures. it is a great
conversation piece. I looked at my car back in 1968 when it was driven
into a pasture. I bought it from the same guy in 2000 when it was still
setting in the same place. It was a major restoration project but well
worth it. jim
