Re: [FWDLK] Crash Test: 1959 vs. 2009

I haven't been following this thread, as it was previously discussed on the FWDLK website.

IIRC, it was claimed, on that other thread, that the Chubbie either did not have an engine, or that its engine was a 6-banger, so that, at any rate, the impact force did not involve the contributed mass/inertia/effect/protection which would have been afforded by having a large heavy V/8 engine be installed in the Chubbie, versus the
much lesser mass of the modern car.

Nothing about politics to follow, here… Just my personal experience with weight.

Might be hard to follow, because of the European brand cars mentioned, but being who I am, I just thought it might add up to the subject.

My first car was a 20 y.o. (then) Volvo 144, back in the early eighties. Tough car, they’re still driving around, here. It weighs a lot, I don’t know exactly how much, and that doesn’t matter so much, here,

Once I came back from an exercise with the Marine Corps in Northern Scotland. I had to drive a lot there and it so happens that they’re driving on the left side of the road. Takes some time to adjust to that, and safely take a roundabout, but then you’re fine.

I’ll beat the crap. When back in The Netherlands, my friends took me for a night out. In my own car, and I was driving, of course. Having a busy conversation with my four passengers – maybe politics? LOL! – I didn’t pay enough attention, and at a roundabout I took a left turn, as I was accustomed to do in Scotland. There came this brand new Zastava (Yugoslavian Fiat). With it’s left front fender, the Volvo hit it right in it’s radiator. The Zastava was totalled. After we bended the fender back off from the wheel, we could continue our night out.

Maybe the weight of me and my friends added in, with us all wearing “The Fonz” leather jackets, but definitely the Volvo weighing more then twice the Zastava counted! We hardly noticed the impact and neither of us was wearing seat belts. No injuries at both sides.

Still feel very guilty for having caused this accident. Luckily, my insurance paid for everything.

Whenever driving one of my Doggies around, I’m always aware of the risks and take extra precautions in my driving style.

I do have the seat belts with gold forward look logo on them, but still haven’t installed them…

Jim, The Netherlands.

/*/Holy meltdowns, Batman!/*/

/*/I can't believe that a subject comes up to this list as APOLITICAL as a crash test video involving destroying an old car and prophesizing about how a real person would fare in such an accident, which just happens to be a subject that I've lived through personally. /*/

/*/When I watched that video, all I could think about was remembering our crash: how I had about 2/10s of a second to react to this oncoming truck, attempting to ditch my Impala into the ditch on my right; my head being whiplashed backward, while my Uncle Dave whiplashed forward until we met and I broke his nose./*/

/*/Of my car coming to rest and my first instinct being to turn the key off because the dash dummy lights had come on and I didn't want the car to catch fire; turning to my passengers (family) and seeing my uncle's face covered with blood, but him pointing to me - him believing I was more hurt than him - when he couldn't even breathe and all I could see of his face were his teeth through the blood - a mixture of mine and his./*/

/*/Of the other driver approaching our wrecked car and screaming at us to get out, oh and by the way I'm diabetic do you have any soda pop? Of paramedics coming and me not knowing if my uncle would live or die, and sitting on the roadside having EMTs picking glass out of my brother and my's tongue and the other driver sidling over blowing cigarette smoke into our faces and saying the wreck was MY fault, and my brother and I simultaneously leaping at the f****** a**hole to show him whose fault the wreck was, but we were so weak the paramedics easily pulled us apart . . . . of my uncle ultimately lingering a few months with ruptured spleen, broken ribs, and oh yeah, a grand return of the giant cancer, and then dying./*/

/*/I think of all of these things, and how I wondered for years what I could've done differently to potentially avoid this accident, when the conclusion was I did nothing wrong. . . . /*/

Also, inform the media about calling our President names, former
Pres. Bush was called just about everything you could imagine, and
    that was the media!!!

I agree, whether you like or dislike Pres. Obama, the _office_
still deserves respect, and I have many issues with him but he's
    still the President.

    Let's stay off politics.

i'm not alone here... and i thought the politcal debate was

i thought AS AMERICANS we had freedom of speech...... i guess
the obama supporters dont beleive in that component anymore...

        whatever...

he won because "certain quote-unquote" americans who never
voted until one of their "own" ran for office... then they
decided to vote.. and the rest blinded by a good speech of
        empty promises

I LOVE AMERICA... a shame AMERICANS sold out......

i guess you missed the broadcast where he admitted to being

terrorist.... i was referring to the terrorists and the

If you hate America so much you should just leave! Saying that
the President of the United States is a terrorist is
unpatriotic. It's an insult to the Americans that elected him
and this nation that I for one love deeply. You need to
realize that there are over 300 million other people in the
USA , it belongs to all of us, not just you. By the way that
crash video was copyrighted 2009 which means it was likely
made in 2008 during the Bush administration by the Insurance
Institute for Highway Safety, which is even part
        of the government .

Keep your hate speech to yourself.

            That was a Pro-Obama commercial?

            Anyway:

I think that the "big car always wins" rule would only
apply when the big car AND small car are from the same
generation. That Impala would have creamed a '60 Valiant
or a Falcon. But obviously not a new Malibu. Same thing
with a Stage Coach and and Model A: Lots more
craftsmanship in that stage coach. But the Model A would
            win :-)
