Re: [FWDLK] 1957 Dodge Brakes -- Need New Wheels to Fit Around Disk Brake Calipers

it depends on which disc brakes you go with, i prefer factory spindles from the [m?] body cars 76-87 [aspen/volare/st. regis/mirada/new yorker, etc]   the '66 up 14x6 [and wider] rims clear the factory disc setups- i've done the conversion using those spindles for the 17th time just last month, and found that factory 14x7 57/58 rims also work [57 firedome/chry ny'er].  another option is to buy the aftermarket white powdercoated "wagon wheel" paint it black, and run hubcaps.  i did this for a set of tires on one of my 58s.  i run an A body 8-3/4 in it, usually with L-60s on a 15x10, but to look nice, i run H78's for the past few yrs now, but need to get a 14x8 rim to #1 set the wheels out farther to the body to look right and #2 allow room for the NHRA studs to NOT collide with the hubcaps.  those rims will also clear the disc setup.  i like 66-68 14" rims- they can handle radial tires without cracking from the added traction, and fit well.

as for the AAJ conversion... a friend used it on a 60 chrysler and i'd pretty sure he's running 14s on it, though not sure if he's running the 62-earlier riveted rims....

Thanks so much to all who responded!  I now have a contact for both used and NOS drums, and if that doesn’t work out, I’ll convert to 4-wheel disk brakes.  J

One more issue:  My original 14-inch wheels will not fit around the new disk brake calipers.  My shop is recommending I switch to 15-inch wheels, and use the 15-inch hubcaps from a 1956 Dodge – but I’d much rather keep the ’57 look.  Can anyone advise me on a 14-inch Mopar wheel, circa late 60s to mid-70s, that would accommodate disk brakes?

Subject: 1957 Dodge Rear Brakes

Anyone have a source for NOS or GOOD used rear brake drums for a 1957 Dodge Custom Royal?
**** OR ****
Can anyone point to the most compatible Mopar rear axle/brake assembly (circa late 60s to early 70s) that I can swap with the original?

Let me explain:

I just installed a disk brake conversion kit in the front and converted to a dual master cylinder (from a ’67 Dodge), but still need to replace the rear drums.  The brakes are unique to Dodge for the 57-58 years only.  From what I can find out, these drums are not being reproduced.  I can’t locate NOS drums, and the used ones I looked at are too far gone.  So . . . my remaining option is to swap out the entire rear end, so I’ll have an easier time servicing the brakes.  The car is in great shape, but it’s not a trailer queen.   I drive it – a LOT – so I need the brakes.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!
