Re: [FWDLK] Problem wih Disc Brakes From a Conversion

I was concerned about my fasteners with the Master Power Brake kit for the rear and the AAJ kit for the front on my Plymouth so I used “lock-nuts” with washers on the front brakes and am relying on the Nyloc nuts (nylon ring at the end of the threads to secure nut) on the rear.  However, I have drawn a line with a “white correction fluid marker” across the torqued nut and flange to ascertain if there has been any movement since installation; this is a good “check” at a glance if anything has loosened.

One of the front calipers on my 300C got loose a few months after the conversion. There was a noise that

gave it away before it could fall off. I couldn't tell if it was my fault or the fasteners. At the time the AAJ kit caliper

bolts came with nuts that had plastic inserts and an interference fit. I'm clueless on how those are rated but wasn't comfortable with how easily they turned.  I changed to hi-grade standard nuts and lock washers. No problems since.

Subject: [FWDLK] Problem wih Disc Brakes From a Conversion

Hello,

Had a problem this weekend with the disc brakes on my 56 DeSoto Firedome. The Drivers side rear caliper broke loose and jammed into the rim and I could not move. I had the car towed home Saturday night. Took it apart and found that it looks like a or some bolts loosened and the unit broke free. I have had the conversion kit in since may be 2005. Periodically checked everything but probably not the last year or two since I have used the car so little. Some of the lock washers look like they have spread and separated.  The corresponding bolt on the passenger side is loose with some wear on the threads.

I am not sure the cause but will call AAJ tomorrow or email and look to buy some new plates, spacers and bolts. I will examine all wheels and replace all the bolts to be sure.

Has anyone had problems that I should look out for with regular examinations or maintenance?

Did I miss something that I should be doing?

Thanks.
