Might be a slightly different symptom but when you get slippage in the morning the tranny guys call it 'morning sickness,' I believe it is partly caused by the old seals in the clutch pack servos etc getting hard and stiff from heat & age . . .

Ed,

 

I had that exact same problem once in my 64 Dodge driver years ago. The

colder it got the longer it stayed stuck in first. Once it shifted, it

was fine afterwards until it cooled off again. I assumed it was caused

by varnish in the valve body sticking a check ball.

 

It went away forever immediately with a fliud change.
