Re: [FWDLK] 6 volt and 12 volt gauges are the same? 1955/1956

Perhaps just the sending units are different?

When I converted my '55 to 12V, I used a '56 parts car and changed over everything I could - but forgot about the gas tank sending unit.  As a result I ran out of gas when the gauge stayed at a higher level for a prolonged time period (I was a silly teenager at that time...wasn't paying close attention to my range but something didn't seem quite right, but it seemed "not right" in a good direction...better fuel economy...NOT!...lol...)

And since I went to neg. ground from pos. ground, I had to reverse the wiring on the "ammeter" on the '55.  The ammeter isn't voltage sensitive ('56 uses a "gen" indicator light).  The oil pressure gauge is simply mechanical/hydraulic ('56 uses an "oil" indicator light).

Interesting question; when I modified my ‘55 Plymouth, I left the starter intact.  Since the car started quickly, and I didn’t need to crank it long, I gained the speed and power of an overvoltage starter. It really spun the Poly.

I am under the understanding that on 1956 12 volt cars (Dodge/Plymouth) that the gauges are the same 6 volt, and that on 12 volt cars there is a resistor to compensate for the different voltages is this true and if so a 55 temp gauge should work on my 56 with the resistor in place.?.
