Re: [FWDLK] 1955 Plymouth Hy-Fire V8 Engine Color Schemes

Your ‘56 Fury and many ‘56 Plymouths have the “A” engine, which was a new design that year; ‘55 Plymouths [241 & 260] and some ‘56 Plazas and Savoys [270] have the Dodge poly engine which is based on the 241-270 hemi Dodge.  You can tell the difference easily from the valve covers; “A” engines have a sawtooth shape at the bottom, Dodge-based polys have scallops.  I’m 99.9% sure that all 277 ci Plymouth engines had silver [argent] valve covers and block. ‘55 was the last year for “floating power” engine mounts on the V8.

I have a 1956 Plymouth Fury with a 303 Poly engine. Correct engine colors are silver block with gold valve covers for it.

My 1955 Plymouth with a 241 V8 has red valve covers.  It was an early production car, and according to the build record that I have for the car, it was built on October 20, 1954.  Tomorrow, my car will be 60 years old.

The Plymouth Owners’ Club judging guides don’t say.

In ‘56, 2v had red air cleaners and 4v had bright yellow air cleaners.  Not sure about ‘55 4v.

This factory sales picture has red valve covers, but it may have been a pre-production model::

Subject: [FWDLK] 1955 Plymouth Hy-Fire V8 Engine Color Schemes

Greetings:

Somehow I have the notion in my head that the subject engine was colored with these schemes:
1.  241-cid:  Aluminum/Silver block and manifolds, with Red valve covers and Red air cleaner
2.  259-cid:  Aluminum/Silver block, manifolds, and valve covers, with Red only for the air cleaner

Can anyone confirm that notion...or correct it?

Thanks,
Jason.
