RE: [Chrysler300] Re: Importing 300's from overseas

With all due respect to y'all including the customs agent, if you plan on
just toddling down to the port one morning to pick up your "new" car with 20
mins to spare and 20 bucks in ya pocket you are more than likely in for a
rude awakening and I can guarantee that agent you spoke to, won't be
available.
Customs usually aren't overly helpful at the best of times from my
experience, especially if you expect THEM to cover all the paperwork because
you don't have an agent/broker, been there, done that. And you'll need
someone to handle the paperwork on the other end too. Yep, also if the car
comes in restored and customs start asking questions you'll probably need a
signed statement from the foreign seller of how much was spent and taxed
accordingly, otherwise they'll take market value of the vehicle in the US.

I'm not trying to put people off bringing in cars, just be properly
prepared.

Here's a sample of freight costs etc from US to NZ I recently received from
my shipping agent, I realize this is going the opposite way, but it may show
some that there are some serious $'s involved. I would have to add any
fumigation and taxes and whatever else (something always does) comes up etc
etc on top of this.........

Owen

a) Inland to our load depot Wilmington-CA -:- US$1100.00
b) Export documentation/Title validation:- US$85.00
c) Loading & ocean freight:- US$1750.00 inclusive
d) NZ arrival charges:- ***NZ$850.00

*** Includes ALL NZ arrival charges other than import & local GST plus any
cleaning that MAF may direct as necessary.

Dear friends:

Thank you all for your courteous and informative replies.

I was encouraged to find out more about this scenario because of your
different comments. So, I called and spoke over the phone with the a
representative of the U.S. customs in the Long Beach Sea Port.

If the vehicle is an american made car that is 20 years or older, you
do not paid any import tax, duties, or whatever, nothing. You only need to
deal with smog compliance, etc, but obvioulsy not for the 300's.

You just go over there and pick it up yourself. You do not need any
help or broker. You will have to pay a fee of $10 to $20 and that's all.
Of course, you have to have the title and either a bill of sale, or a
purchase receipt from the seller. The price you pay does not make any
difference to customs.

However, the only catch is that if the car was restored, or modified,
or fixed while it was overseas, THEN, you could be prepared to pay some fees
on that, and could be a good amount. I don't know how this can be
verified, but, that's a different subject.

       This is a sweet deal!

       Take care!!
