This exact problem was a real headache with our 90 LeBaron GT vert the 
first 5-7 years we had it.
Those LITTLE caps were mucho $$ to replace at the dealer.
They eventually redesigned them and at the same time reduced the $$ to a 
better price (like 60% less per)  The Wheel design itself allowed the 
RTV trick to work out well, as long as someone made sure it was done at 
the time of service or right after.
I wonder about doing this with full size covers tho, the surfaces are 
entirely different, so I would tend to believe that a lot more area 
would have to be covered with glop to effect a certian level of trust in 
the usage in this mannor.
