RE: [Chrysler300] re using Pertronix electronic ignition on dual points distributor

I installed one on my J about 18 months ago. I initially ran into some
challenges I suspect largely a result of an original distributor that has
some wear. My conclusion from reading various posts is that nearly 100% of
the time the issue is the distributor or the installation. The Pertronix
works and it works very well! I wound up bench testing it outside of the
distributor to understand how much air gap is needed between the magnet
sleeve and the ignitor module and the alignment of the ignitor module and
the magnet sleeve. These are the two issues that determine if you will get
spark (assuming proper electrical connections of course). Specifically I had
to move the magnet sleeve up about 1/8 inch on the point cam to better align
the sleeve with the module, rather than seat it down all the way, even
though that is counterintuitive. Then I had spark. Again, it had something
to do with the nature of my particular distributor. The Pertronix should
work just fine out of the box. You also don't need to jumper the ballast
resistor with a stock coil. The unit will fire on about 8 volts or greater
and cranking voltage exceeds that with a decent battery.

I worked with John Lazenby and the Pertronix tech support and they were most
helpful. I really like the unit.

Fern and all

I had the same experience when I did a bench test w/ Pertronix installed in
my 57 300 distributor, no spark. I tried a second unit I had for my 57
Imperial. Same thing, no spark. I called Pertronix and talked to chief tech.
He asked if I could send him the distributor so they could analyze.
He reported back that they found the plastic rotor was not seating all the
way down over the cam lobes. They tapped it down and it worked. When I got
it back I put a large socket over the top of plastic rotor and gave it a
light tap. I could see it seat. Bingo it worked. They sent me a free unit
for my trouble.

Has anyone on the list had any success in using the conversion by
Petronix in their dual point distributor? We have tried to install that
kit
in my 1962 300H and cannot get it to work. Is there a special way to index
this unit to make it work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Who is
the member on this list that sells these?
