A small amount of pinging is really not harmful, especially on a car 
not used for daily transportation.  My GTX, my 1973 Barracuda and my 
1970 300 have all had light pinging on tip in and under light load 
for 10 years or more.  I know it's not ideal, just pointing out that 
it is possible to live with it.  I tried retarding the spark, but the 
engines lose too much "zip."  In my case as soon as the RPM climbs a 
bit the pinging disappears.  If not, I downshift.  Just my 2 pennies.
