Re: [Chrysler300] To the Sticklers

John,
My favorite guy on ‘Beaver was Eddie Haskell...talk about a slick snake oil salesman...almost as nauseating as the guy who introduced the ‘57 Dodge in the Forwardlook advertisement! My Uncle traded in his ‘54 Bel Air 4 door (I remember riding standing up in the back floor when he hit a bump and yelling that he lost his hub cap) for a two tone dark brown and pastel light brown ‘57 Dodge Coronet 4 door sedan. I was fascinated by the speedometer. But THEN... I was baptized by immersion when my Mom and Dad came home on a Tuesday night and said they were getting a new DeSoto! Dad picked me up from school in our ‘55 Packard Clipper on a Friday afternoon just as I was waiting to board the school bus (the bus driver was a bowling buddy) and he told him that he was going to take me for a treat! TREAT? It was as good as Christmas morning in May! We went and traded in the Packard for the ‘57 Firesweep Sportsman 2dr hardtop in baby blue and white. Those 6 tail lights and canted fins and high front bumper and exhaust nacelles and the whine of the torqueflite , push buttons and driving on a summer day with the windows down and listening to Yankee baseball on the radio with my Dad imprinted me forever with the glory of the Forwardlook. I liked the Dodge but loved our DeSoto! THEN a neighborhood lawyer drove home in a ‘57 300C when I was walking in the ‘hood with my Dad and I was hooked for life. Let’s say ‘57 Chrysler products bonded our family. I however carried the torch in my heart for them since I didn’t have to worry about busted torsion bars on a Sunday drive home on the Taconic Turnpike (DeSoto) or a blown head gasket on a Saturday night on the way to Long Island on the Taconic Turnpike with my Aunt and Uncle (Dodge). Oh .... and... the rust issues. Dad traded the DeSoto in for a Rambler (almost made me experience childhood depression) and my Uncle traded the Dodge in for a ‘62 new Impala 4 door sedan...OK. The 300C and my life has already been written! 300’ly, Rob

Hi Rob,

Exactly..me too. And Broderick Crawford (?) 56 D500 highway patrol car; CHP tested all the 56 hi po cars , 315 cu in D500 killed all the 265 chev and 312 ford police cars, so they went Dodge. I remember the 56 Dodge running down the bad guys all the time.. Same on mass pike here in 62; they had 426 long ram white and green Chrysler station wagons , (?400hp H engine?) after the first Cobras out ran them in 390 and 406 Fords…one Cobra guy in particular kept playing with them. Griffith ,too..remember those?

I remember being pulled over on turnpike (in that 57 Dodge) and the headlights of the ram car bouncing up and down in rear mirror at idle. There was a picture somewhere in a boston paper about them running down and cutting off a Cobra against the guard rail in the big Chrysler , supposedly up to 160 (I am sure, exaggeration, to scare off those who would try) Road was pretty new than, looked ideal for a high speed run. I Remember that cop car pulling out, leaving me , going fast after someone else , floored, kicking up gravel and wheels squealing a bit , big roar.

Kind of amazing, (?English) , I ended up with the all powder blue 57 Dodge convert, with white top , that the Lennon sisters used to sit in on that Welk show, at the beginning, singing. . My dad loved the show, I would not go that far, (= later Stones fan, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holley at the time, bubble music not my thing), but loved that 57 Dodge. I have had 4 of those over the years, including a 57 D500 hemi stick, red and black one , 3;73 (?) axle, Coronet stripper in 1961. No power anything. Later it got a 300D hemi in it. I have one now , 57 Custom Royal convert with 480” 440 in it, and red and white 57 D500 coupe . .

I sold the rust free Welk car, which had TV #2 or something written in red paint on gas flap, (inside it), other TV stuff like that, to a guy who took it to Europe , Austria I think. Naturally have second thoughts, now. All of a sudden those 57 Dodges (and those really sharp gold trimmed 57-58 Desoto Adventurers) are starting to rival our 300’s in value. I think of them as mini 300’s , a little more nimble, but very similar in driving . D500 had the stiff springs, brakes etc . Never did find a D501, I heard they made 50 .. Or a Regal Lancer , but saw two of the latter , D500 B block, Quads, around Boston when new.

The “life synchrony” of guys who love 300’s is amazing, at some level…

I know Rob, ---you were really waiting for Wally, on leave it to beaver…

John

I still remember the Dodge logo with the Forwardlook insignia hanging over the band on The Lawrence Welk Show on Saturday nights! It was the only thing that could sustain me watching Mr. Welk with the family until Leave It To Beaver came on afterwards! Now as an adult, I love listening to Lawrence Welk songs and seeing old shows and use Beaver Cleaver as part of a password for various computer applications (Pun Intended)! My how priorities change! 300’ly, Rob Kern

Hi, Don—

Did they call them that, though in 55? I remember 57 as when Chrysler ads said that..and the cars meant it. With the two interlocked triangles, or V’s Was it used by them before 57?

I remember vividly how sharp a 57 dodge hardtop looked, when first I saw it ---and it kept getting better. To me the Regal Lancer trim package, in copper and black, or copper and white was just beautiful (58) ..and 57 300C. Some cars from brand X pretty good too 57 Ford Sunliner, 60 Buick Electra 225 bucket seat convert (I have one of those..the 300F real competitor—and the only GM I ever really went for) . 53 stude hardtop coupe had all those covered pretty well too, 4 years before.. But I personally identify that wording as 57..and I well may be wrong!!

To all the Sticklers our there (and that is meant as a compliment),

Another error made by some members of the automotive press is about the introductory year of THE FORWARD LOOK.

Some references say 1956 is the year, perhaps because of the addition of the fins to all the Chrysler Corp. cars. Others say 1957 because of the dramatic changes to the styling. The correct year is 1955. That is when the first cars fully designed by Virgil Exner made their debut.

So here's to 1955 and the cars of THE FORWARD LOOK.

  Jack,

If your comment was addressed to me I guess I'd be a "Stickler". I strongly believe in getting the facts and stating them correctly.

  Respectfully,

  John Lazenby, the "Stickler"
